Course Expectations & Policies

All graded components (homework/exams/etc) are to be completed individually unless stated otherwise.

Attendance

All students are generally expected to attend all meetings of this course, and actively participate in all course meetings. If you miss a class meeting for any reason, you are responsible for the material presented, and it is your responsibility to obtain any missed handouts or other materials.

For students who reside in distant time zones, you are not expected to attend the lectures synchronously. All lectures will be recorded. The recording will be made available to all students for asynchronous viewing/reviewing.

Attendance is good for you!

Almost every research out there shows highly positive correlation between attendance and academic performance. To make this benefit more tangible, I will look at your performance more favorably for the final grade if you have (almost) perfect attendance.

For example, if your total score is close ($\le 1\%$ away) to a letter grade cutoff, I will round up your score. Another example is when you get a passing grade overall but you narrowly miss the bar for a component (such as exams). In that case, I will give you a passing score if you have perfect attendance.

Perfect attendance means you have attended almost all the lectures (with exceptions of a few).

Zoom records your attendance! The time you joined and left each meeting is logged. Make sure to login to Zoom using your JHU credentials, otherwise you will not reap the benefits of this policy.

For students in distant time zones ($\ge 9$ hours away from Baltimore), your timely asynchronous viewing will count as attendance. I can see in Panopto when and for how long you've watched each lecture recording!

I will not provide you with your attendance record! You must track it yourself.

I only go through the logs at the end of the term, and only for students who I consider they may benefit from this policy.
